Thomas Ward is a Spook's apprentice; he sees things others can't see, he must rid the towns of all things nasty, ghostly and ghastly, and he will learn to live a life of solitude. Welch does an extraordinary job of bringing every character to life, creating the perfect sweet and urgent voice for the main character and many distinctive and eerie voices for the other characters.
